Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine Update

As you all might have heard and seen on the news, the FDA and CDC are ceasing all Janssen (Johnson and Johnson) COVID-19 vaccine administration due to rare blood clot formation in 6 people out of almost 7 million people who have received the vaccine across the US. The blood clots developed in these 6 people 2 weeks after receiving their Janssen vaccine. In order to reevaluate its safety and efficacy, the CDC and FDA are working on getting more information. However, until this has been resolved or until North Atlanta Primary Care (NAPC) has an alternative in place, NAPC will not be administering the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine. If you have an appointment in the upcoming weeks for a COVID-19 vaccine at NAPC, you will receive a call to inform you of the status of your vaccine. If you have not received a call in the next few days regarding your COVID-19 vaccine, please call 770-442-1911 for more information.

Again, these blood clots are extremely rare. If you have already received a dose of the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine please monitor yourself for any signs of severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath within two weeks after vaccination. If symptoms arise please contact NAPC immediately at 770-442-1911 to discuss the symptoms with a healthcare provider.

NAPC strongly believes that staying safe and vaccinations are the key to overcoming this pandemic. Please make sure you continue to wear a mask in public, wash your hands frequently, and watch your distance around others. If you have access to receive the Moderna of Pfizer vaccines please get vaccinated. NAPC is here if you have any questions regarding your health, COVID-19, and vaccinations. Thank you for your understanding.

Kind Regards,

COVID-19 Vaccine Update

North Atlanta Primary Care (NAPC) has been working with the Georgia Department of Public Health to ensure a steady stream of COVID-19 vaccine supply. Unfortunately, due to distribution and availability issues with the vaccine NAPC has not received enough vaccine to vaccinate all patients in Group 1A+ and currently does not have any doses available. However, vaccination is key to the end of this pandemic. NAPC is confident that vaccine supplies will increase to vaccinate patients. There are now vaccination sites being set up for mass vaccination of the public. In order to register for an appointment please go to the state vaccination site online and sign up for COIVD-19 vaccination. Georgia COVID online registration sites can be found at Georgia still prioritizes based on shot availability to Group 1A+. If NAPC gets doses before your appointment you can cancel your appointment online and receive the vaccine at NAPC. Once NAPC receives more vaccines a message will be sent out to all patients. Vaccine supplies are expected to increase and vaccine expansion to essential workers and patients with pre-existing conditions to be added in the near future.

COVID-19 Vaccine Facts:

  • COVID-19 vaccines have passed rigorous reviews and are highly effective.
  • Scientists had a significant head start developing the COVID-19 vaccines. COVID-19 is very similar to other viruses, which already have vaccines.
  • Testing was thorough and successful. More than 70,000 people participated in clinical trials for the two vaccines to see if they are safe and effective. To date, the vaccines are nearly 95% effective in preventing COVID-19.
  • There is no COVID-19 virus in the vaccine. The vaccine imitates the infection so that our bodies create antibody defenses to fight off COVID-19.
  • The first vaccination phase includes but is not limited to healthcare personnel likely to be exposed to or treat people with COVID-19, first responders, people at risk for severe illness, and other essential workers.
  • Those who will be vaccinated in the first phase will be notified when/where to receive the vaccine. These sites will likely be at or near work and care sites, or at our office if possible.
  • Side effects are mild, temporary, and normal signs that your body is building protection. You may experience pain and swelling in the arm of the injection. Throughout the rest of your body, you may experience fever, chills, tiredness, and headaches.

In other COVID-19 news:

  • It appears that COVID positivity rates are decreasing. Hospitalizations are decreasing.
  • COVID testing supplies are in stock. If you are going out, back to school, work, get tested regularly, even if you are asymptomatic.
  • COVID treatments especially monoclonal antibodies work when started early. If you have symptoms get tested early. Monoclonal antibodies must be started in the first few days of symptoms of COVID. They are administered by IV and are licensed only at hospital outpatient centers.
  • The NAPC Alpharetta clinic is open on Saturday morning from 8 AM to Noon. NO appointment required. Walk-ins are welcome.
  • NAPC has COVID-19 testing and can test you for COVID and FLU with rapid tests every day including Saturday.
  • If you travel, get tested both before and after a trip. Testing is especially important with travel by plane, bus, or train.

Please remember to continue to mitigate your exposure to COVID-19 by wearing a mask, limiting exposure to others by socially distancing when in public, and maintain good hand hygiene. NAPC continues to engage with the health systems and the Dept. of Public Health weekly to maintain the highest standards of care for COVID.
